According to a police officer who did not want to be named, four suspects involved in this heist were arrested in different areas around Johannesburg.
The officer said two suspects were arrested in Fairview while the other two were arrested in Bez Valley shortly after the incident.
“The robbers pounced on the cash-in-transit security guards who were collecting money in Hillbrow and shot one of them,” said the officer.
“The robbers then fled the scene and our officers, who were on patrol, noticed a speeding car along Joe Slovo Drive and gave chase. A shoot-out between the police and the robbers ensued and one of our officers was wounded.”
The officers managed to corner them in Fairview and two suspects were arrested and a motor vehicle, as well as an AK47 rifle, were recovered.
The officer was then taken to the nearby hospital but it is still not clear what his condition was, as well as that of a security guard, as we’re still on the scene, he said.
The other two suspects, according to the officer, were arrested in Bez Valley with help from the Metro police.
“I’m not sure what happened on that scene as I’m following this on our radio but I can confirm that two suspects have been arrested.
“A rifle is believed to be recovered also on that scene and I’m also not sure if the money was recovered or not…we’ll share information as soon as it made available,” he concluded.
Other suspects are believed to be still on the run and police have launched a manhunt.
This is a developing story and more information and comment will be made available as soon as same is to hand.
