Eating disorder survivor to share her experience

NORWOOD – There will be delicious treats for those who attend.

Lifeline Johannesburg is collaborating with Mandy-Lee Ginsberg, a survivor of an eating disorder, and will be holding a talk on eating disorders on 7 June.

Ginsberg is the founder of Fighting Eating Disorders and the talk will be heard at the LifeLine offices in Norwood in the evening.

Ginsberg will share her life experience of living with an eating disorder for 17 years, her recovery process and passion for reaching out to others.

She will discuss her life after a slow form of suicide and how she learned to eat for pleasure and nourishment rather than with shame and fear.

Part of the discussions will also include the various types of eating disorders and the link between eating disorders and addiction.

According to the statement issued by LifeLine, Ginsberg believes that she went through 17 years of her own private hell for a purpose.

She has taken her adversity as an opportunity to turn it into something meaningful, said the statement, adding that she is passionate and determined to break the silence and taboo associated with eating disorders and has set upon a path to help sufferers find recovery and heal.

Nicole Imerman, LifeLine connect counselling manager, said the talk forms part of LifeLine Johannesburg’s on-going training programme.

Imerman said it is aimed at empowering people to become more aware of eating disorders.

“This workshop is not only aimed at people with eating disorders but also for parents, teachers, counsellors, therapists and the community at large.

“We feel that by running these talks, we will educate and also empower people to talk about eating disorders openly,” she said.

The talk will cost R100 per person and R50 for LifeLine volunteers and payment can be made at the door.

A raffle will also be held on the evening for a R200 voucher for carnelian-tapas and cocktails.
