#ChildProtectionWeek: Safer children, better communities

JOHANNESBURG – The Johannesburg East Cluster will be hosting a Child Protection Week event at the Hillbrow police Station with the aim of tackling child-related issues and ensuring their well-being.

A brighter prospect of the community, as well as the world’s future, depends highly on the young children of our society.

Fortunately for these young ones, the Child Protection Week initiative is marked by the nation to shine the torch on the rights of children and issues affecting them.

Spokesperson for Parkview Police Station, Captain Tintswalo Sibeko acknowledged that Men For Change and Women’s Network from the Johannesburg East Cluster will host a Child Protection Week event on 8 June.

“Fifty underprivileged schoolchildren have been identified and invited alongside police members to Hillbrow Police Station for the event and there are goodie bags set aside for them to receive and take home,” Sibeko said.

The Johannesburg East Cluster involves seven police stations which are Parkview, Rosebank, Hillbrow, Yeoville, Cleveland, Norwood and Jeppe.

Spokesperson for Rosebank Police Station, Sergeant Bongi Mdletshe gave a comprehensive description of the initiative.

He said it was aimed at strengthening the relationship between police, schools and children and entailed the following:

Mdletshe stated that other stakeholders usually get involved – Metro police and fire extinguishers give illustrations on safety precautions such as not leaving candles on at night.

“We educate the children about the assistance we provide in terms of victim empowerment and erase the mindset that police always shoot at criminals and show them this side of the police that can accommodate little kids and give them love,” he said.
