#CharlotteMaxeke: Hospital shuts down as riots ensue due to staff strike [VIDEO]

PARKTOWN – Community members are advised to avoid the surrounding area of Charlotte Maxeke Hospital.

Riots have reportedly broken out at the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital in Parktown and community members are advised to keep clear of the area.

UPDATE: 1.29PM

Staff are allegedly demanding a 12 per cent minimum living wage increase.

Small fires were started at the hospital gates. Damage seems to be wide spread but no reports of injuries have surfaced.

Lungiswa Mvumvu‎, the hospital spokesperson, has confirmed that the unrest on the premises is due to a protest by disgruntled staff members.

“We appeal to clients to call before coming to the hospital. Patients who are admitted in the hospital are safe and the police are monitoring the situation. If you require emergency health, please go to your nearest clinic or hospital,” Mvumvu advised.

This is a developing story and Rosebank Killarney Gazette reporters are currently making their way to the scene. More information will be provided as details become available.
