Devil on the Cross continues to amaze audiences
BRAAMFONTEIN – Devil on the Cross’ adaptation extended for more shows.
Following a successful and eventful opening week, Devil on the Cross – a stage adaptation of Ngugi wa Thiongo’s iconic book by renowned theatre practitioners Kgafela oa Magogodi and Prince Lamla – has been extended for more shows until Saturday, 19 May.
Now on at the Wits Theatre, the adaptation dramatises the corrupting influences of international money and culture on a not-so-fictional country – SASASA.
In a smooth synergy between theatre, music and fine art, the audience follows the trials and tribulations of a young, beautiful and troubled woman who is constantly objectified by the men in her life.
Devil on the Cross reveals the insistent Western influences attacking Africa’s progress and freedom. The story ultimately indicates that the parasitic ventures of the ruling elite in the neo-colony will not persist if the oppressed masses revolt.
The play brings a de-colonial turn to theatre and disillusions the audience on Africa’s current political, economic and social situation – a bitter pill to swallow as Joburg celebrates Africa Month.
