Cindy Kree, executive director of the Union of Jewish Women (UJW) Johannesburg, said their organisation is growing, despite the current global challenges.
Kree addressed members of the union during their annual general meeting held in Houghton.
She said the success of the union can be seen in many ways, including through their flagship Kosher Mobile Meals project which supports needy people in the community. Through this initiative, both the Jewish and the broader community enjoy a delicious meal, served by volunteers who pack and deliver it to them, wherever they are.

Kree said their achievements and progress over the years could not have been possible without the support, advice and encouragement of other executive committee members.
“UJW’s successes rely heavily on our outstanding staff who continue to go above and beyond the expected call of duty.
“Over the past year, we impacted over 14 000 lives through feeding, clothing and empowerment projects. The projects of the Jewish women continue to be varied and impact the lives of those around us.”
She added that they wouldn’t be able to make a difference were it not for the assistance of the community and encouraged them to continue donating to and supporting their various fundraising functions.

Elaine Katz, the union’s treasurer, said their biggest challenge is fundraising due to the current economic climate and that they hope to see an upswing. “Fundraising continues to be a challenge for many organisations, obviously including UJW, because of the South African and global environment.
“Although finances are always an issue, we are still able to continue to make a large impact on both the Jewish and the broader communities.
“We have been fortunate to have continued sponsorship for our projects, including the Alexandra Aftercare and the Granny and Child Headed Households projects,” she said.
Meanwhile, for Nelson Mandela Day on 18 July, the union promises a fun-filled day for both the children and adults they work with. Kree said they will be baking 1 000 cupcakes which will be decorated and delivered to them at their homes.
