Orchards clinic construction leaves a mess

ORCHARDS – A resident has expressed concern over the storage of construction sand and rubble on Oaklands Road.

Orchards resident Hilly Gittleson has expressed concern over construction sand and rubble lying on the pavement across the road from the Orchards Clinic construction site.

Gittleson, who lives in a complex across from the site, said there are many issues that have arisen from the clinic construction such as a lot of noise. He said, “The noise comes with construction, so we are not too worried about that. But they have all this rubble and sand on the pavement on Oaklands Road which is something we have not been consulted about.”

He said that it’s dangerous. “There’s no space for pedestrians to walk, it forces people to walk in the road,” said Gittleson.

Ward 74 councillor David Fisher said there should be no rubble or sand on the pavement. He added that he has received numerous complaints regarding the issue, with the rubble also being a security risk. “The rubble and sand is so high that people can just climb on top and look into residents’ homes,” added Fisher.

Johannesburg Development Agency spokesperson Susan Monyai said, “We will discuss this issue with the contractor on site because the rubble and sand should not be hindering the movement of pedestrians.”

The Orchards Clinic has been a contentious issue for the local community. The construction of the clinic was halted in March last year when a structural problem was found. Following an investigation and consulting a specialist engineer, the clinic has gone through corrective measures to fix the problems.

The clinic is expected to be finished in November when it will be handed over to the Health Department of the City of Johannesburg.
