Two Parktown High School for Girl Grade 10s, Maryam Suleman and Julia Kiggell were elected to be the representatives of the student council at the State of the City Address (Soca) at the Council Chamber in Braamfontein.

“Getting to take part in this prestigious event and being able to witness proper protocol was both exciting to see and very educational. It was all in all a great experience,” said Julia.

Soca was presented by City of Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba and city council speaker Vasco Da Gama addressed issues such as housing, roads, education and healthcare.

Two youngsters from Parktown High School for Girls attended the State of the City Address and got the opportunity to rub shoulders with the leaders and students from different schools.

“The girls have attended workshops and a two-day camp where they learned about the governance of Joburg and leadership skills,” said deputy headmistress, Judy Koch.

“These two girls volunteered to attend the State of the City Address. They are loving the opportunity that has been given to them to be part of the student council.”

“I thoroughly enjoyed the educational experience and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to experience the council sitting,” said Maryam.

The remainder of the day was spent engaging with different council members from different political parties. Both girls learned a huge amount of information and enjoyed gaining some political experience.
