Would-be hijackers in Hillbrow swear at stone-faced motorist as they flee the scene

JOBURG – The brazen bravery of a motorist leaves onlookers and his would-be hijackers stunned.

A motorist’s audacity in defying armed thugs who were poised to hijack his white BMW left not only onlookers stunned but his would-be attackers too.

This occurred in morning peak-hour traffic on 8 May at the busy intersection of Twist Street and Empire Road in Hillbrow. It is just a stone’s throw away from the Hillbrow Police Station, and North Eastern Tribune journalist Nduduzo Nxumalo witnessed the incident while in a taxi on his way to work.

Nxumalo said he and other witnesses were watching as three thugs pounced on a motorist sandwiched between other cars waiting for the traffic light to turn green. One of the three attackers was armed with what appeared to be a gun, knocked on the victim’s window in a bid to get him to open it.

As the thugs knocked several times with the gun, the motorist, with nerves of steel, just looked at them stone-faced and made no attempt to open the window or door.

After knocking several times, the thugs realised it was not their day and this victim was not giving in, and so quickly slipped away from the scene and disappeared into the concrete jungle of Hillbrow while swearing at the man.

Nxumalo said no shots were fired and no attempt was made to smash the windows of the car, leaving the calm and collected motorist to simply drive off when the lights turned green and continue with his journey as if nothing had happened.
