WATCH: Joburg remembers Hugh Masekela in dance and song

JOBURG – Artists come together in song and dance to remember late African icon.

Last night, 3 May, A Celebration of Hugh Masekela saw a memorable opening night where artists came together in song and dance to remember the late African icon.

While the night was a celebration of Bra Hugh, Joburgers came in their numbers to usher in Africa Month as Bra Hugh was more than a trumpeter, he was a bandleader, composer, singer and defiant political voice who held Africa dearly.

Masekela’s love for Africa has not only been exhibited throughout his career but was also once been exhibited explicitly in a poem titled They say we used to be Africans very, very long ago

“Respect, humility and generosity have always been the crucial cornerstones of African social life,” Masekela said.

The show kicked off on a tap-dancing note, reminiscent of the turbulent days of kwela and Sophiatown life.
