Police warn motorists about theft out of motor vehicles in the CBD

JOHANNESBURG – Avoid exposing your valuables by putting them in your boot.

 

The Johannesburg central police warn motorists about the problematic crime of theft out of motor vehicles in the CBD.

Captain Xoli Mbele, the spokesperson for Johannesburg Central Police Station, said they would like to warn motorists about this crime trend. “We would like to sensitise motorists not to become victims of theft out of motor vehicles and to always exercise caution when they leave their cars unattended,” said Mbele.

“We are investigating several cases of theft out of motor vehicles in our policing precinct. We also suspect that this is a [crime trend].”

When committing this crime, suspects use a remote control to block you from locking your car when using central locking.

Here are some safety tips:

  • When parking your vehicle ensure that your doors are locked by physically checking them.
  • Stand close to your vehicle when using central locking.
  • When driving around the CBD, ensure that your windows are slightly open or closed.
  • Always be alert when approaching intersections and red robots because most of the suspects hang around those places.
  • Yur doors must be locked at all times.
  • Ensure that your valuables such as your handbag, wallet, laptop and iPad are placed in the boot of your car.
  • Never display your valuables on the car seat.

Working together with the police, the community can eradicate theft out of motor vehicles around the CBD, he said.
