Two men have been sentenced to jail for a house robbery they committed on 13 April 2016 at 8th Avenue in Parktown North.
The Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court found Mokgale Enoch Makola (27) and his accomplice Xolile Xhongo (38) guilty of house robbery. Makola was sentenced to 18 years for armed robbery and five years for possession of an unlicensed firearm; while Xhongo was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment.
The two had walked into the house, with one holding a gun and one with a knife in hand, and tied the victim’s hands and legs with cable ties in his office before taking the victim’s wrist watch and a wallet.
The two also stole money, jewellery and an X3 BMW. They went into the kitchen and found the helper, whom they also tied up with cable ties and ransacked and stole kitchen appliances.
The crime was reported to the Parkview Police Station on the same day and they were arrested in Alexandra with the assistance of the tracking device on the vehicle. The docket was allocated to Detective Constable Patrick Moilwa and Detective Constable Khazamula Shilaluke for investigation.
Through their investigative abilities, they managed to secure a conviction with the evidence they presented.
Colonel Theledi Gopane, the station commander, has congratulated his two investigating officers for securing the sentence and said they must keep up the good work.
The station’s spokesperson, Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, said the suspects have been in jail for the past two years. “The investigation process takes a long time because we sometimes have to wait for ballistic and forensic evidence to strengthen the charges. So the evidence was finally gathered and the two men are currently serving their sentences,” she concluded.
