Notorious death corner gets some repair

DUNKELD – The intersection responsible for a number of accidents over the past two years has finally been attended to by JRA.

The non-fatal accident on 23 April at the intersection between Kent and Northumberland streets in Dunkeld West seems to have finally prompted some action from the Johannesburg Roads Agency who arrived the very next day.

“I am glad the JRA finally responded and have come to do something about the road,” Ward 90 Councillor Martin Williams stated.

Williams said that it has been six months since residents paid for the road to be repaired and were beginning to get agitated by the lack of action.

“We have put up the speed hump as well as two safety posts today, then next week will put the speed hump sign and complete painting,” Precious Dlamini who was in charge of the project, for the agency.

This intersection which has plagued the community for the past two years earned itself the notorious nickname ‘death corner’. There are presumably over 20 accidents that have occurred within the past two years.

There seems to be an element of bad driving as well because people come speeding down Northumberland Road and say their breaks have failed.

Williams still requires more to be done as the trees seem to contribute to the problem. “These trees are obstructing the view of the signposts with their shadows which makes it difficult for oncoming motorists to halt in time,” he said.
