Zulu was rearrested by the police hours after an alert on the escape was sent out.

His accomplices identified in court were still at large at the time of going to press.

They overpowered a cook and police officer when they went to the cells to give them and six other inmates supper. The cook and officer are said to have left two cell doors, including a burglar door, unlocked. As they handed out the food, the four suspects are said to have overpowered them and dragged them into the cell. They threatened to stab them while demanding cellphones and cash.

In the process, the cook was stabbed in the head. A phone and R100 in cash were taken from the officer.

Afterwards, the escapees locked the victims in the cell with the six cellmates. The escapees’ footsteps were heard on the roof as they fled. Luckily, the cook still had his phone on him and he alerted other officers, who released the victims after locating the keys, which had been dumped in the kitchen. An alert was then sent out.

Patrolling officers came across Zulu, on his own, and apprehended him when he acted suspiciously. He had no shoelaces on his takkies and had red paint on his jeans, which is suspected to have been from the roof while escaping.
