Residents to vote for new Ward 72 councillor

JOHANNESBURG – Both the DA and ANC are expected to mobilise their voters to win the ward.

Political parties have revealed their candidates to contest Ward 72 by-elections which will be held on 25 April in the Johannesburg north-eastern suburbs.

Democratic Alliance revealed Lionel Greenberg, while the African National Congress and Economic Freedom Fighters have revealed Pheladi Mafalo and Thabiso Mmako as their candidates.

The position of a ward councillor became vacant last December after the previous councillor, Steven Kruger resigned, citing health issues.

The DA’s constituency leader in the Johannesburg region, Jack Bloom, said they nominated Greenberg because he is a long-time resident of the area. “Greenberg has been a member of the DA’s Ward 72 branch for a number of years and is very familiar with the issues as he is a long-time resident in Sydenham.

“He was nominated following the DA’s selection process to choose a candidate who would best represent the voters of this ward. I am confident that Lionel has the energy, skills and determination to improve Ward 72.”

Greenberg runs a legal software firm and he is a professional mediator in settling disputes. “Lionel will use his legal expertise to enforce by-laws through the newly revitalised municipal courts,” Bloom said.

Greenberg has committed to cracking down on overcrowding, noise, illegal dumping and other by-law infringements. He said he will ensure that municipal departments do their jobs in fixing roads, cutting grass and collecting refuse.

“I will do this working together with residents, security and business associations to improve the area,” he said, adding that he will also assist with billing and valuation issues.

The ward was previously represented by the DA following the 2016 municipal elections with a voter turnout of 64.91 per cent. The party won the ward by 82.48 per cent.
