Waverley Residents, Ratepayers and Homeowners Association launch

WAVERLY – The active residents of Waverly launched the Waverly Residents, Ratepayers and Homeowners Association on 10 April.

The Waverley Residents, Ratepayers and Homeowners Association (WRRHA) brought the local community together for their launch at the St Mary’s School Waverley hall on 10 April.

Chairperson of the newly-formed association, Tracey Lavers said it was formed due to the level of crime in the area. The reason for the first meeting was to raise money for the association’s first security initiative to instal overview cameras with licence-plate recognition. “We want to proactively tackle crime,” she added.

Lavers said, “There is a problem with our deteriorating infrastructure, so that is another one of our goals in terms of people keeping their pavements clean, replacing missing manhole covers and problems with potholes.”

Ward 74 councillor David Fisher said, “This fits in 100 per cent with my plea for an active citizenry, and this is exactly what this is doing with residents taking ownership of their environment; they have my full support.”

The association brought a number of local residents to the meeting, with the aim of introducing their committee while also raising various issues in the area.

Fisher addressed the issues of urban creep and densification in the Waverley area. He said residents should be careful that they apply the necessary municipal by-laws when various developments are proposed to help them make their objections, and force contractors to engage with their community.

Committee member involved with security and safety, Themba Khumalo announced the association’s partnership with CAP Security. Khumalo added, “If we work with our partners it will help our community a lot.”

CAP representative, Mark van Jaarsveld gave the residents an overview of the security initiative for which the association is currently raising funds to put into place. The initiative involves the installation of new CAP CCTV poles, which host a general overview camera and a licence-plate recognition camera which is linked to a cloud-based server.
