Nine busted for drinking and driving in Rosebank

ROSEBANK – Rosebank Police Station arrested nine drunk drivers on Friday. This has been confirmed by police spokesperson, Sergeant Bongi Mdletshe.

In a joint operation, carried out by Rosebank police officers and the Johannesburg Metro Police Department on the corner of Jellicoe and Jan Smuts avenues in Rosebank on 13 April, saw nine drivers arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

“We found nine people who were under the influence of alcohol, from the hours of 8pm to 4am.”

The Rosebank police were doing their usual operation in Rosebank and said they do this on Friday month-ends. The police also check for unroadworthy and stolen vehicles during these monthly operations.

The nine arrested people were released on bail the following day after they had their blood tested to establish the amount of alcohol they drank.

“The JMPD had breathalysers and it turned out that all of them had reached more than the 0.4 limit and this is putting other drivers at risk on the roads. It is very wrong,” Mdletshe said.

In South Africa, the legal alcohol limit is a breath-alcohol content of 0.24mg per 1 000ml or a blood alcohol limit of 0.05g per 100ml for an adult weighing 68kg.

Mdletshe said all of them will be summoned at some point as the police station is waiting for their laboratory to determine the amount of alcohol in their blood to be submitted and will appear in court in a couple of months from now.

“If it’s found out that their alcohol intake is high, they could face five years of indirect imprisonment; this is endangering other people. The reason it takes months is that there are too many cases of this kind,” he said.
