JOBURG – Take a look at what's been happening in our courts last week.

Murder and arson

A 34-year-old Alexandra woman appeared in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court, facing four charges of murder and one of arson.

Vanessa Mpho Sedimela is accused of killing a family of four after starting a fire in which the family members tragically lost their lives.

Sedimela told the court that she intends to plead not guilty to all charges. She has subsequently abandoned her bail application. Her case was remanded to 11 May for further investigations.

Vicki Momberg

The application for leave to appeal of convicted and sentenced Vicki Momberg was postponed again on 11 April by the Randburg Magistrates’ Court.

The defence asked the court for a postponement to allow them to finish preparing the paperwork.

Momberg is appealing her two-year jail sentence and conviction after she was found guilty on four counts of crimen injuria.
The state is opposing Momberg’s appeal application with state prosecutor Yusuf Baba saying the application was defective.

The case was postponed to 18 April at the same court.

Bail granted

The 39-year-old father and former teacher accused of raping his own eight-year-old son was granted bail by the Randburg Magistrates’ Court. Magistrate Lebogang Leshabane granted the father, who cannot be named in order to protect the rape victim, R5 000 bail.

The father was told to not contact the victim or the mother.

He has subsequently moved out of their matrimonial home and will be staying with his parents.
