No outcome on the Sizwe Hospital housing development matter

SANDRINGHAM – The development is delayed due to a number of objections, with residents divided in their views.

Ward 81 councillor Irene Rugheimer said they are still waiting for the outcome of an investigation regarding the Sizwe Hospital housing development in Sandringham.

There has been no progress on the project, which is earmarked for housing for residents of the Johannesburg north-eastern suburbs, including Alexandra.

The delays are due to a number of concerns, including those of graves that are on the land.

Another delay, according to Rugheimer, is due to objections from some residents within the surrounding suburbs, who believe the project will bring more problems than solutions. There have been a number of objections, with some residents saying the project will cause heavy traffic, while others believe the area should rather be converted into a green space.

This has prompted City of Johannesburg officials to visit the site to ascertain the real challenges facing the project. Recently, a delegation from the City held a three-day tribunal between 6 and 8 March to finalise their report, however, the findings remain unknown.

Rugheimer said she had not heard what the outcome of the tribunal is.

The councillor confirmed to the North Eastern Tribune that more people had submitted their objections in the latest process. “We are still busy and we expect more people to present their objections soon,” said Rugheimer during the tribunal.

On March 26, Tribune sent more questions to Rugheimer about the outcome and she said they were still waiting. In another follow-up attempt on 3 April, Tribune again sent questions to the councillor, however, she remains without answers. She only said, “We are still waiting.”
