Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, mother of the nation, political activist and fashion icon remembered

JOBURG – We take a look at Mama Winnie’s iconic fashion moments.

The mother of the nation, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, may first and foremost be remembered for her role in the fight against apartheid.

However, throughout her illustrious life, Mama Winnie inadvertently became something of a style icon with her vivid afro-centric wardrobe and becoming linked to woman empowerment, agency and perseverance.

In 2014, the BBC reported that Madikizela-Mandela’s various styles were reminiscent of her own personal story – a unique story that spanned from freedom fighter to South Africa’s first lady.

Her clothes reflected the momentous changes the country experienced in her lifetime. The BBC mentioned that Mama Winnie used combat fatigues, Che Guevara-style berets, matronly suits and ferocious animal prints, depending on the particular political climate.

South Africa’s struggle stalwart was often photographed in colourful, statement-making outfits, making her an inspiration for Ruth Carter, Black Panther’s costume designer. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Carter said she looked to the late activist particularly when creating outfits for Angela Bassett’s character Ramonda in the film.

Madikizela-Mandela’s influence on Black Panther’s costume design is one of many influences she’s had in fashion, including influences on Nelson Mandela’s style as she was responsible for introducing him to Sonwabile Ndamase, the head of Vukani Fashions, who subsequently designed for Mandela.
