Othandweni Family Care Centre gets love from The Ombudsman for Short-Term Insurance

PARKTOWN – A Johannesburg-based NPO were the recent beneficiaries of a donation by The Ombudsman of Short-Term Insurance.

In celebration of Human Rights Day on 21 March, The Ombudsman for Short-Term Insurance (Osti) in Parktown donated gifts and equipment to the Othandweni Family Care Centre in Soweto.

Osti, an independent industry scheme which provides fee-free dispute resolutions to consumers, has for the past three years supported Othandweni Family Care Centre through the provision of items identified through their needs list.

“During the visit, we donated items which included 10 cot mattresses, two baby mats, 500 nappies, five bulk packs toilet papers, 80 packs of sanitary towels, 10 bags of washing powder, five kettles and steam irons as well as two first-aid kits,” said project coordinator at Osti, Marilize Blignaut, who emphasised that the visit was a heart-warming experience.

“We were privileged to be taken on a tour of the centre and were able to spend some time with children.” Othandweni, which means ‘place of love’ is a Johannesburg Child Welfare non-profit organisation that provides a range of direct child protection services for abused, abandoned, neglected, orphaned and vulnerable children in the greater Johannesburg area.

The centre was established in 1984 and currently houses 90 children ranging from the ages of birth to 18 years. “We are extremely grateful for the donations,” said Phineas Phiti, centre manager at Othandweni.

“Our relationship with the Ombudsman for Short-Term Insurance has been a tremendous one. They contact us regularly to find out what we need, and that for us, is what makes this a wonderful relationship.”
