A 27-year-old man jailed for raping a minor

JOHANNESBURG – Man sentenced to life after raping 12-year-old.

The Johannesburg Magistrate Court has sentenced Tshiu Joseph Mofokeng to life imprisonment for raping a minor at a year-end function held at City Deep Flats in Heidelberg Road.

The 27-year-old was found guilty on 20 March for raping a 12-year-old when her 25-year-old aunt took her to a Christmas party. The incident occurred on 25 December, according to the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station, Captain Xoli Mbele.

Mbele said that on Christmas day at around 1am, the child’s aunt took the children to sleep in one of the flats and went back to the party. “When she went to check on the children she realised that her niece was not in the house with the others,” he said.

“One of the children told her that she had left with a man. The man asked the child to accompany him to look for someone after he left his girlfriend at the party.”

People started to look for her and they eventually heard her screaming a short distance away.

According to Mbele, the child initially told her aunt that the suspect had attempted to rape her. “After interrogating her she then told her aunt that he had raped her while he covered her mouth with his hand. After he finished raping her, that’s when she was able to scream. Mofokeng was questioned but denied raping the child.”

Moffatview police who were patrolling the area were stopped and alerted about the ordeal and he was arrested immediately. The child was taken to a nearby hospital where doctors confirmed that she had been raped, added Mbele.

He said Mofokeng’s name will be added to the National Register for Sex Offenders, said he was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
