A 36-year-old man arrested in Bertrams for illegal firearm

BERTRAMS – A driver jumped a red traffic light and ends up arrested for a far heavier crime.

The Johannesburg Flying Squad arrested one suspect and recovered an illegal firearm on 6 March in Bertrams, East of Johannesburg.

The suspect was arrested on Lang Street and he is being charged with possessing an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, said police spokesperson, Sergeant Desmond Subramoney.

According to Subramoney, police were conducting their routine patrols when they spotted a red Toyota venture with dark windows. “The vehicle skipped a red robot and immediately the police called for backup and followed the suspicious vehicle until the backup arrived, and that’s when the police pounced on the vehicle,” he said.

“They recovered an unlicensed 9mm Glock without serial numbers and two live rounds.”

The pistol was confiscated he said, adding that investigations will determine where the suspect got the firearm and what he was going to do with it.

The 36-year-old is expected to appear in the Jeppe Magistrates’ Court soon facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
