Jeppestown – Mhlanzi's accomplice is still at large and police have launched a manhunt.

The Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court has found Sabelo Mhlanzi guilty and he was sentenced to 10 years in prison on 7 February.

The 28-year-old Mhlanzi was facing charges of business robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm, which took place on 7 May 2017 in Jeppestown.

Mhlanzi robbed a shop in Marshall Street in Jeppestown with his accomplice who is still sought by the police.

The spokesperson for Jeppe Police Station, Captain Richard Munyayi, said the two robbers, Mhlanzi and his friend, entered the shop with firearms and robbed the owner of valuables including groceries.

“They both produced firearms and demanded money. They took an amount of R10 000 and groceries before they left the shop,” said Munyayi.

Police were called to the scene and a description was given to them.

Munyayi said the police then went out searching for the suspects and spotted them walking along the street.

“They ran away when they saw the police and the police then gave chase.

Following an investigation, the court found Mhlanzi guilty and sentenced him to eight years for armed robbery and two years for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

“Both sentences will run concurrently,” said Munyayi.
