Jeppe police arrest three suspects for illegally possessing firearms

Jeppestown – One of the suspects remain under police guard in hospital after the police shot him during a shoot-out.

Jeppe police have arrested three suspects in one day on separate incidents for possessing firearms illegally on 27 February.

At Commissioner Street in Jeppestown, the police received a call for a backup from their colleagues and proceeded to the scene, said Jeppe police spokesperson, Captain Richard Munyayi.

On arrival, Munyayi said they noticed two men running in different directions and gave chase.

“During their chase, one suspect who was armed, shot at the police who then shot back, injured him and then arrested him,” said Munyayi.

“Other police officers gave chase to the other suspect and arrested him as well.”

An ambulance was called to the scene and took the wounded suspect to the nearby hospital.

Munyayi said a firearm was confiscated and the suspects were charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

“The injured suspect is currently in hospital under police guard while the other one is detained at the police station. Both the suspects will appear in court soon.”

Meanwhile, police arrested another suspect also for unlawful possession of a firearm following a tip-off.

Munyani said, “Police received information about a man who was seen carrying a firearm and they proceeded to the address in Jeppestown where they found the man fitting the description.

“He was on the corner of Kasteel and Concession streets. They requested to search him and found a .38 special revolver in his possession.”

When asked to produce a licence he failed and the police immediately arrested him and detained him at the Jeppe Police Station. He is charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and he will appear in court soon.

Police investigations continue.
