Clean-up a major facelift for Parkview Golf Club

PARKVIEW – Parkview Golf Club conducts a clean-up operation due to lack of proactiveness by City Council.

The Parkview Golf Club recently completed a major clean-up of the overgrown brush and grass verges outside the golf course along Emmarentia and Gleneagles roads and Wicklow Avenue.

The project began on 23 February and subsequently lasted four days. Contractors cut and removed the overgrown grass which had grown beyond knee height due to the summer rains, around the club’s five-kilometre perimeter through Parkview and Emmarentia.

The club said workers were outsourced at its own cost of around R10 000 as the course equipment at the club was not suited to the cutting of the verges. “Our understanding is that the City Council lacked the budget to meet its obligations for pavement maintenance,” said club director, James Searson.

Grass is collected during the clean-up operation before being turned into compost to be used on the grass banks around the golf course.

“As both a ratepayer and Parkview resident, we recognise the negative impact that untidy pavements can have on the appearance of the course and the suburb.

“Unfortunately, we have a great deal more to cut than individual homeowners, so the project required a budget and time for planning.”

Greenkeeper at the club, Ashley Nenungwi, said residents can be happier following the clean-up operation. “After cutting, I think the residents will have a nicer view since it was very bad at first. We delayed a bit because normally the municipality sees to the cutting of the grass.”

He added, “It is understandable that at times residents or members of the club are not happy because people can commit petty theft and hide the stolen items in the grass. And so I think it was a good idea for the club to get a subcontractor to conduct the clean-up.”

In conclusion, Searson expressed the club’s thanks to course neighbours who trimmed their pavements to keep the suburb neat and clean. “For several years, the club has worked closely with the residents’ committees in the community around it to promote the club as a facility for all residents and build a spirit of co-operation between the club and residents.

“Last year, the grass cutting on pavements was done by the council but the club assisted with a donation to the Parkview Residents Association towards costs of an additional clean-up of refuse in the gutters.”
