The Peoples Theatre in Braamfontein is bringing Alice in Wonderland to Johannesburg during March and April.
Theatregoers will get to travel down the rabbit hole as they join Alice, one of literature’s most beloved heroines, on her madcap adventures through a mystical world. Alice’s journey begins innocently enough as she chases the White Rabbit but things, however, soon take a turn when her adventures become increasingly more strange as she races the dodo bird, gets tied up with Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, raps with a bubble-blowing caterpillar, and is shrunk, stretched, scratched and stuffed into a teapot before finally beating the queen at her own game.
Alida Senekal, a resident of Parkview and a member of the Alice in Wonderland cast will put her acting skills on show during the 64-show marathon starting on 5 March and running until 29 April.
Senekal said, “The characters I’ll be playing in Alice in Wonderland are the queen of hearts as well as the caterpillar. The queen is obviously a furious, all-over-the-place character with a lot of power in Wonderland – which is different from the caterpillar who Alice meets just lazing around and smoking the pipe.
“Alice [in Wonderland] is a wonderful story, which sees Alice travelling down the rabbit hole to join all of these wonderful characters. She meets Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum as well as The Mad Hatter, The Hare, The Rabbit and a whole host of fantastical creatures.
“Her journey to Wonderland, obviously, is not all just a smooth ride. Some twists and turns that audiences can expect.”
