Two suspects arrested in Mayfair for illegal firearms and hijacked vehicle

MAYFAIR – The recovered vehicle was reported hijacked in Kempton Park.

Two suspects were arrested by the Johannesburg Flying Squad and Metro police for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

They were also arrested for possession of a hijacked motor vehicle, according to the spokesperson for the squad, Sergeant Desmond Subramoney.

“The incident happened at No.2 Park Drive on 21 February in Mayfair,” said Subramoney.

“It is alleged that officers from the national CIG spotted a suspicious-looking white Jetta VW vehicle and called for backup.”

“They then followed the vehicle until a backup vehicle arrived and that’s when the police pounced on them, searched the vehicle and recovered an unlicensed AK-47 rifle and a Taurus pistol with serial numbers filed off.”

The vehicle is reported to have been hijacked in Kempton Park.

He said the AK-47 rifle, a pistol with ammunition and the hijacked vehicle was confiscated.

“At this stage, we are not sure of how many suspects are involved besides these two but an investigation still continues.”

The suspects, aged between 37 and 41, will appear in Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon.

“They face charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition as well as possession of a hijacked motor vehicle.”
