Glenhazel Primary School’s sports committee member, Nobuhle Zondo, said their children took the first three positions in the inter-schools competitions to secure their spot in the inter-cluster competitions.

The school is part of the Johannesburg East District that includes Bramley, H.A Jack, Sandton View, Rembrandt Park, Orange Grove and Lyndhurst primary schools.

The competition first started with the in-house schools’ competitions then followed by the inter-schools and now they are going for the inter-cluster competitions.

Zondo said they will then proceed to the district competitions depending on their performance in the inter-cluster competitions.

“The athletes will participate in track events [long and short-distance] relays. They will also participate in field events such as long and high jump as well as shot put,” said Zondo.

To qualify in the competition, Zondo said only children between the ages of eight to 13 years old are eligible to participate.

She said children have to bring their birth certificates for verification first before they can be registered to participate. “Also, only those who took the first three positions during the inter-schools’ competitions qualify to go to the inter-cluster competitions.”

The school has wished those who qualified well saying this will give them good exposure and enable them to learn from other children.

It will also give them an opportunity to learn the discipline of an athlete at a higher level, according to Zondo.

Transport and refreshment will be provided by the Johannesburg East District.
