Parkies can now play on their own turf

PARKTOWN – Parktown High School for Girls can now play on their own turf after the official opening of the school's new multi-purpose turf recently.

Parktown High School for Girls celebrated the official opening of the school’s new multi-purpose synthetic short-pile turf recently. Jeppe High School for Girls and Potchefstroom Girls High were invited to share in the fun and play friendly hockey matches against the Parktown teams.

The day started off with a fun-filled skills clinic hosted by SA Women’s Hockey player Christine Roos, followed by the handing over of spot prizes while photographs were taken and autographs were signed.

“Parktown’s hockey captain Melissa Winter was identified by Roos as a skilful player with heaps of potential, earning her a South African Women’s Hockey team shirt,” said Shannon White, the teacher in charge of hockey.

When the hockey games commenced, the players showed off their talent. Players who were particularly enthusiastic received prizes for their efforts. Lucky draws were held throughout the day and lucky winners received awesome prizes.

Tracey Megom, Parktown’s headmistress, and Ziaad Suleman, the secretary of the school’s governing body, said a few words and then cut the blue ribbon to officially open the multi-purpose turf before the Parktown Old Girls took to the field to take on the first team. It was a competitive game with both teams displaying Parktown camaraderie and pride.

To end off the event, the new and old Parktown girls sang the school war cry. A cocktail party for guests followed.

White said, “We received many compliments, and it was evident that everybody enjoyed the day. A huge thank you must go to all who were involved in making the opening a success.”

“The opportunity to use of our own multi-purpose turf is a dream come true for all new and old Parktown sportswomen, coaches and staff. We look forward to many more opportunities to make use of this fantastic facility and are confident that it will allow Parktown sport to reach new heights.”
