Metro police and the Ward 90 committee are working together to ensure that by-law infringements are reported and responded to.
During the committee meeting, Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams emphasised that he appreciates Metro police for all the work they do, which often goes unnoticed.
In Ward 90 alone there are 16 hotspots which are the areas in the ward that face the most by-law infringement which includes displaced persons, negligent driving, illegal dumping and litter.
Some of the hotspots include Jan Smuts Avenue and Lancaster Avenue, where some motorists drive into oncoming traffic during peak times, and the Hugh Wyndham Park where there is suspected drug and alcohol abuse as well as displaced persons.
Metro police, however, are committed to addressing the issues as best they can. The #BuyaMthetho operation launched by the new chief of Metro police, David Tembe aims to ensure that all by-law infractions are addressed.
Johannes Sebola, chief superintendent for Metro police, said they would work with the community to ensure that by-law infringements are addressed.
One of the problems faced is the lack of officers allocated to Ward 90. Ideally, there should be at least 10 officers to monitor the ward as well as assistance from other government departments and community members.
However, Sebola said they have between six and eight officers working in the ward. “Sometimes complaints will come in at the same time during the same day so unfortunately we cannot address every complaint at the same time,” said Sebola.
Sebola said Metro police has made efforts to monitor troublesome intersections during the week, however, the dilemma they face is that the by-law infringements stop when they are in the area.
“We hope to have joint operations with other departments fortnightly so that recurring problems, such as displaced people, can be addressed more thoroughly. We really thank the community for sending their complaints, they are our eyes, they see what we can’t see.”
