Celebrating 50 years of giving back

JOBURG – The Johannesburg East Rotary Club celebrates its 50th anniversary of giving back to the local community.

The Rotary Club of Johannesburg East will celebrate the 50th anniversary of charter on 18 March.

The club will be commemorating its lengthy commitment to ‘service above self’ which has been illustrated through the Rotarians dedicating their time and energy to worthwhile community causes with a focus in areas such as supporting education and assisting vulnerable mothers and children.

President of the club Maggie Huni said, “We are celebrating the dedication of all the past and present Rotarians to meeting the needs of the local community over the years.”

“We are extending a warm invitation to all Rotarians, past Rotary presidents, past exchange students and, of course, Friends of Rotary to attend the anniversary celebration in honour of the club’s dedicated members and their accomplishments.”

Over its 50-year existence, Joburg East club has raised funds to support many local charities including World Vision, Khanyisa Outreach, Uitkoms Home for Girls, Bienvenu Shelter, Mandeville Centre for the Physically Disabled, Rose of Hope Crèeche in the Denver informal settlement, and Alma Primary School in Limpopo.

Secretary of the club Genie Wright said, “World Vision, for example, has been a beneficiary of our club since the 90s. We support one child through the programme and we are rewarded with school reports and a thank you card every December.”

The club anniversary will also commemorate their work in the Khanyisa Outreach Skills Development Project which was established in 1992 by Rotarians Marion and Alastair Brown, which has been a tremendous success by teaching valuable skills to vulnerable women and children.
