World Read Aloud Day was celebrated with great passion and enthusiasm at St John’s Preparatory on Thursday 8 February.
Nicky Sulter, the librarian at St John’s College said, “The day began with a story read to the prep by college head boy, Raymond Barrow. Choosing an excerpt from the master storyteller, Roald Dahl’s autobiography, Going Solo, he held the boys’ attention with his engaging and animated reading. He is an incredible ambassador for both the value and joy of reading and St John’s College.”
World Read Aloud Day, which is celebrated on 1 February, aims to encourage young children to read and develop a passion for reading.
The UIIIs (Grade 7 learners) then took their favourite children’s picture book to the pre-preparatory to share with the boys from Grade 0, 1 and 2. Small knots of highly absorbed little boys, were seen all over the school, their delighted faces hanging on every word of the stories being told.”
“How simple it is to retain the attention of children when they are doing something they love,” concluded Sulter.
