The Highlands North-based Darchei Noam School is organising water in support of the people of Cape Town who have been faced with a severe drought in the last couple of months. This is part of the school’s outreach programme for this year.
Shireen Saacks, the principal of the inclusive school in 8th Street, said they have received donations of water and financial support from a wider community of Johannesburg north-east suburbs. “We have received water for drinking as well as water for household needs and we also received R1 200 in financial donations to buy water.
“This initiative was due to my trip to Cape Town where I met someone who told me they are faced with a serious water crisis. She told me that there’s a lack of water to drink as well as to flush their toilets, so you can see how dire the situation is.”

Saacks said when they first made the call to the parents and the community they didn’t expect so much support defining it as overwhelming.
She cited Tora Academy, King Davids High Sandton, Sandton Sinai, Sharavei Tora Nursery, Summerwood primary schools as well as the Union of Jewish Women as partners in this campaign.
Saacks said the South African Airways also supported this initiative and they have allowed them to fly with about 150 kilolitres of water to Cape Town in the plane.
There will be trucks and bakkies from Tow Trucking and Sunshine Express from Johannesburg to help transport the water for free to the Mother City.
Water is expected to reach Cape Town at Highlands South and will be distributed to various schools with the help from the Jewish Board of Education.
