President Jacob Zuma steps down

NATIONAL – President Jacob Zuma said he did not agree to serve with perks of the position.

Jacob Zuma has announced, during a late night address at the Union Buildings, that he will be stepping down as president of the country.

The announcement comes after days of speculation about Zuma’s future after he was recalled by the African National Congress.

“I fear no motion of no confidence or impeachment because they are the mechanisms for the people of this beautiful country to remove their president,” he said.

Earlier today, 14 February, Zuma said during an interview with the SABC that he had not been given reasons to step down. He had also added that he wanted to remain in office until June this year.

The ANC had given Zuma until the end of today to step down. In the event that he did not step down, the ANC caucus had resolved to vote in favour of a motion of no confidence on Thursday, 15 February, brought by the Economic Freedom Fighters.
