ORT makes dreams come true with Second Chances Programme

HOUGHTON ESTATE – Learners from the Second Chances Programme have begun studying at university after they improved their maths and science marks.

Learners who participated in the BidCorp/ORT Second Chances Programme look forward to an exciting future with their improved matric results, which will allow them to get a tertiary education.

The programme was started to allow Grade 12s to improve their maths and science results. The Class of 2017 obtained an incredible 92,5 per cent pass rate for their maths and physical science. Nine of them improved their maths mark by more than 80 er cent; ten improved their science mark by more than 80 per cent and of them improved their marks in both subjects by 80 per cent and more.

Nhlamulo Chauke increased her mark from 51 per cent to 73 per cent. Chauke has now started her medical sciences degree at the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University.

Another ORT Second Chances graduate, Bekokuhle Hlophe began a chemical engineering degree at the Mangosuthu University of Technology with his improved maths mark of 70 per cent.

Second Chance student, Tshepang Mampane, whose dream is to be a pilot, said,” I joined the ORT SA programme to upgrade my mathematics and physical science [marks] but maths mostly because I could not qualify for Civil Aviation’s minimum requirements.”

Tshepang’s improvement from 47 per cent to 60 per cent will allow him the opportunity to study for the job of his dreams.

“ORT SA has given me a second chance to make a better future for myself and my whole family – in aspects beyond academics. ORT SA changed my life, made me love maths and gave me hope. I can do anything with a positive mindset.”

Head of the ORT SA Stem Academy, which focuses on science, technology, engineering and maths, Mpho Matlala said he is absolutely delighted with the results. “The BidCorp/ORT SA Mathematics and Science Second Chance Programme has made a difference to the lives of learners from disadvantaged communities.

“Empowering them with the tools, skills and grades sets a path for their further studies and choice of careers. It is through this type of intervention that unemployed youth can gain hope for a better future.”
