St John’s learner to compete in prestigious piano competition

HOUGHTON – Andrew Raney is one of only 10 participants who has been selected for the Hennie Joubert Piano Competition.

St John’s College is delighted to report that Andrew Raney has been accepted into the Hennie Joubert Piano Competition which takes place in March this year.

The competition is one of the most prestigious of its kind in South Africa and only 10 participants are invited after a recorded audition. The competition, which was started over 30 years ago, was started by South African piano manufacturers Dietmann, however, following the death of Hennie Joubert, an influential South African musician, the competition was named in his honour in 1986.

Andrew will be performing a large variety of challenging works in the Endler Hall of Stellenbosch University, totalling close to an hour of music. The entry requirements for the competition are strict with entrants required to present a CD of their repertoire before they can proceed to the next round.

The competition requires the participants to perform all their pieces from memory. Andrew will perform in the first round after which the top five pianists will be selected for the final round. The final round is a performance with the Stellenbosch University Symphony Orchestra with the pianist as soloist.

Share your thoughts on Andrew’s achievements on the Rosebank Killarney Gazette Facebook page.
