Hillbrow police arrest a suspect with rifle in Berea

BEREA – The suspect was arrested during a routine police patrol.

 

A 32-year-old man was arrested on 29 January by the Hillbrow police for possession of an unlicensed rifle in Berea.

The suspect was arrested during a routine police patrol, according to the spokesperson for the Hillbrow Police Station, Constable Mduduzi Zondo.

The suspect was bust on the corner of O’Reilly and Catherine streets in Berea.

“Our officers were on their routine patrol when they noticed a suspicious man who was carrying a bed sheet and the police approached him,” said Zondo.

“When they searched the sheet they discovered a rifle and the suspect was immediately arrested. Preliminary investigations revealed that the rifle is registered to someone residing in Randburg.”

The suspect appeared in the Johannesburg Regional Court on 30 January and faces a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm.

“The suspect has been remanded in police custody and he is expected to appear in court again after seven days for his bail application,” Zondo said.

Meanwhile, Zondo reported that the Hillbrow police also arrested a number of suspects over the past weekend.

The arrests are as follows:

  • 4 for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm
  • 6 for shoplifting
  • 8 for possession of dagga.

“All the suspects have appeared in court and others made bail while others remain in police custody for further investigation,” concluded Zondo.
