The CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation along with the collaboration of several local celebrity ambassadors, call on all South Africans to adopt a heart for children living with cancer this International Childhood Cancer Day.

The annual event, first launched in 2002, is the brainchild of Childhood Cancer International, a global network of 188 grass-roots and national networks of parent organisations in 93 countries.

Childhood Cancer International is the world’s largest childhood cancer patient support and advocacy network. The global campaign is celebrated on 15 February each year and is a global collaborative initiative geared towards raising awareness of childhood cancer, and to express support for children living with, and those who are survivors of cancer and their families.

“I agreed to be a CHOC ambassador [as] one, being a father of three, I cannot imagine a child dealing with such a traumatic ordeal and having lost some family members and friends to cancer [myself], I know it is a daunting experience,” said local celebrity and CHOC ambassador, Kenneth Nkosi, adding his weight as one of the ambassadors of the global campaign. “So I call upon all South Africans to take part in this campaign and show support for those little heroes fighting this disease.”

Julia Anastasopoulos, popularly known as SuzelleDIY, who is a co-campaign ambassador, called on all sectors of society to contribute to the initiative. “We call upon schools, corporates and community groups to wear blue on the day with the ICCD badge or heart-pin or [even] buy their loved ones a delicious heart-shaped chocolate for Valentine’s Day,” she said. “It will all help in the effort to spread the message.”
