Suspects arrested during police patrol

Johannesburg – Suspects were arrested during routine police patrols in the Johannesburg CBD.

A suspect was arrested on 21 January by the Johannesburg central police for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition at the corner of Kerk and Mooi streets.

The man (35) was arrested during a routine police patrol in the Joburg CBD.

According to the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station, Captain Xoli Mbele, the suspect failed to produce a firearm licence.

“Police were busy with their routine crime prevention duties when they saw three [men] arguing,” said Mbele.

“They stopped and tried to intervene. The suspects were under the influence of alcohol and police noticed a firearm on one of the [men] and asked for his licence to possess a firearm. He failed [to produce it] and he was apprehended.”

While police were still on the scene, Mbele said the rightful owner of the firearm, a 42-year-old man, produced a licence for the gun and he was arrested for negligent handling of a firearm.

An investigation was underway and the suspects will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.

In a separate incident, Mbele reported that police arrested two suspects between the ages of 20 and 25 years old for allegedly robbing a 29-year-old woman.

The suspects were arrested at the corner of Bree and Claim streets on 23 January.

“Police were again busy with their routine crime prevention duties when they saw two [men] robbing a [woman].

“They were arrested on the spot and a cellphone of the victim was recovered.”

Both the suspects are in police custody and are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.
