Two arrested by Yeoville police following church robbery, two still at large

YEOVILLE – Two suspects arrested by Yeoville police following armed robbery.

 

Yeoville police officers arrested two suspects on 21 January who were involved in an alleged church robbery in Yeoville.

Spokesperson for Yeoville Police Station, Captain Sifiso Mabizela said the incident occurred on the corner of Muller and Bedford streets at 11am.

Mabizela said, “Four suspects, one carrying a firearm, entered a church and [allegedly] threatened to shoot the congregation members if they did not handover their belongings.”

He said the suspect alledgely took the victims’ belongings before fleeing the scene.

Yeoville police were then tipped off and responded. Police officers were assisted by a community member who followed and monitored the suspects’ vehicle and led the police to the suspects’ address near Louis Botha Avenue.

“They knocked at the address and the four males started running away and were chased. Two were arrested while attempting to jump a wall.”

The two suspects were positively identified by the complainant. Several items belonging to congregation members were recovered at the residence including four car keys, two hand bags, 13 cellphone covers, 29 cellphones and three tablets. The suspects were charged with armed robbery.

The two arrested suspects, aged 37 and 40, appeared in Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 23 January for their first appearance.

Investigation is still ongoing for the two suspects at large.
