Suspect assaulted then arrested after leather shop robbery

JOHANNESBURG – The suspect was assaulted by the community before he was arrested by the police.

A robbery suspect was arrested by the Johannesburg central police on 12 January and four of the 21-year-olds accomplices were still on the run.

Johannesburg Central Police Station spokesperson Captain Xoli Mbele said a manhunt was underway.

The four suspects are wanted for a business robbery that took place at a shop in the Johannesburg Central Business District. Mbele said the incident occurred at a leather shop on the corner of corner President and Goud streets.

It is alleged that three of the men entered the shop pretending to be customers while the other two waited outside the door.

“One of them produced a firearm and they took an undisclosed amount of money before they fled the scene,” added Mbele.

“The owner of the shop screamed for help and the community gave chase. One of the suspects was apprehended and assaulted before the police came to his rescue.” Paramedics treated the injured suspect on the scene.

He said a firearm used in the crime had not been recovered. An investigation was underway and the arrested suspect was expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon.

“We are appealing to the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.”
