Joburg Metro police’s vigilance prevents armed robbery in the inner city and surrounds

JOBURG – We need to be more vigilant than ever before, advises the MMC for Public Safety.

On Wednesday, 20 December, two Johannesburg Metro police officers were on foot patrol and noticed an unoccupied but suspicious white BMW vehicle parked at the Langlaagte Driving License and Testing Centre (Langlaagte DLTC).

In a statement, the MMC for Public Safety, Cllr Michael Sun, said when the Metro police officers investigated, they first noticed that the license disc did not correspond with the registration number plate and, upon a closer look into the vehicle’s dark tinted windows, they saw there was a rifle wrapped in clothing inside. The officers immediately called for backup and for the SA Police Service’s (SAPS) Forensic Unit to investigate.

“After confirming their suspicion, the officers managed to get into the vehicle and discovered one AK47 with 55 rounds of ammunition, one 9mm pistol with 10 rounds of ammunition and 42 rounds of ammunition in spare magazines,” said Sun.

“The vehicle is confirmed to be stolen in Johannesburg.

“It is believed that the vehicle and the firearms were left in the Langlaagte DLTC to attract minimal attention in preparation for an armed robbery in the inner city of Joburg and surrounds.”

Sun urged residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious persons or cars to the police immediately.

“We need to be more vigilant than ever before, if it was not for the vigilance of the JMPD officers and quick reaction, a gang of armed robbers could have gotten away with murder.”

The illegal firearms and ammunition together with the stolen vehicle have been handed over to the SAPS for further investigation.

Residents can report any suspicious activities to the Joburg Metro police on 011 375 5911.
