#ICYMI: Pre-trial proceedings of Thulsie twins postponed

JOBURG – Pre-trial proceedings of terrorism accused twins postponed to next year February.

Pretrial proceedings against the terrorism-accused Thulsie twins were postponed in the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg on 12 December.

Judge Raylene Keightley postponed the case against twin brothers Brandon-Lee and Tony-Lee Thulsie to 20 February next year. The postponement was granted to allow for arguments in court on the constitutionality of the Terrorism Act that the duo are charged with.

The postponnement was also granted to give the defence time to file papers requesting the State to disclose the names of the witnesses and what evidence they will use against the accused.

The two brothers were arrested in July last year by the Hawks on suspicion that they were plotting terrorism attacks against a US mission in Johannesburg as well as some Jewish cultural sites. They have been in custody since their arrest

A provisional indictment that was handed in by the State in April alleges that the two brothers had specific targets. King David High School in Randburg, where the majority of pupils are Jewish was among the twins’ planned targets

In the document the State alleges that Tony-Lee accessed the website of King David High School. The indictment did not state why he accessed the school website or what information he was looking for.

The document revealed that cartoonist Jonathan Shapiro (Zapiro) was also a target because of his cartoon ‘Messenger of Allah’.

The provisional indictment also alleges that the pair were going to execute terrorist activities by using firearms, explosives and possibly poisons.
