A bunny-lover living in Killarney has used her love for rabbits to create a calendar to raise money to sterilise and neuter the popular animals.
Annica Marincowitz has not always loved rabbits but her ex-boyfriend found a rabbit in a street in Cape Town and decided to take it home. “At first I wondered why he brought a rodent into the house but as time went by, I fell in love and now my life is completely taken over by them and I love it.”
In her search to find out more about rabbits Marincowitz came across the Bunny Huggers South Africa Facebook page which is a community of over 2 500 members. About 85 per cent of the members in the group are women and Marincowitz decided that photographs of men holding bunnies would be perfect for a calendar to raise funds.
“The problem with bunnies is that they are very cute so people easily buy one and then it never ends, they can be very naughty and they need space.” Many people end up give up their rabbits away when they understand the requirements that come with them.
Marincowitz added that one of the priorities of the Bunny Huggers group is to make sure that all rabbits are sterilised before they find a new home. The cost of sterilising bunnies is high and all the proceeds from the calendar will go towards the medical costs.
Compiling the calendar was not as straightforward as Marcincowitz had thought and the process took about three months. “It was extremely hard work, I didn’t realise how difficult it would be.
“For each visual, we needed to find a model, and a big requirement was being an animal lover, and then I had to find the bunnies, which was a bit difficult, and a professional photographer who would be willing to give their time.”
Adverts in the calendar were sold and the calendars were pre-sold to raise money for printing costs. One thousand calendars have been printed which are being sold across the country.
