Norwood flood knocks over wall

NORWOOD – The heavy rain caused major flooding in the Norwood area on 27 November.

The residents of Norwood have been hit hard by the rain that came pouring down on 27 November.

It caused great flooding in the area and especially affected a few residents on Louis Road who saw the boundary wall at Patterson Park topple over for the third time.

Local resident Ricky Naidoo said that at around 6pm he heard the boundary wall fall with flood water spilling over onto Louis Road.

He said the wall had previously fallen over on 9 November last year and two years before that and has become a serious issue everytime flooding happens in the area. He added that the water funnels through the development across the road and builds up until the wall falls over.

Naidoo said that last year’s flood had washed debris and dirt across Louis Road and onto his property, destroying his car. He added, “I just hope the City can figure out something regarding the flooding so it doesn’t affect us every year because this is ridiculous.”

Spokesperson for the Johannesburg Road Agency Bertha Peters-Scheepers said that they are currently assessing the damage with their engineers on Louis Road and will find the best-suited solutions for this incident to not occur again.

Ward 74 councillor David Fisher said that the City will try its best to assist the residents with a better capacity channel. A public meeting will be held on 5 December at Highlands North Boy’s High School at 2pm Fisher added, “This will be an opportunity for the local residents to engage with the project team, to hear what the proposals are and to have input.”
