Attempted truck hijackers arrested in Norwood

Norwood – Police have arrested six suspects for attempted hijacking and they are searching for three others in connection with a business robbery.

Following a tip-off, the Crime Intelligence Unit managed to apprehend alleged truck hijackers just before the actual hit.

This happened on 17 November at the corner of Iris Road and Grant Avenue in Norwood.

It is reported that through the information that the intelligence unit received from an informer, six suspects were arrested for attempted truck hijacking.

According to the spokesperson for Norwood Police Station, Captain Elliot Tshivhase, the suspects intended to hijack a delivery truck belonging to World Logistics.

Tshivhase said one of the senior officers in the unit received information warning him about a hijack that was to take place in Norwood.

He followed the information and monitored the situation. The officers spotted the truck on Oxford Road in Rosebank and followed it, Tshivase said.

“While they were following the truck, a suspicious-looking blue Isuzu Nissan bakkie and a grey Mazda were following the truck,” said Tshivhase.

The officer then ordered his team to stop the cars on the corner of Iris Road and Grant Avenue and subsequently ordered the suspects to step outside and Tshivhase adds that that’s how the truck was rescued.

All six suspects were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and further detained at the Norwood Police Station.

In a separate incident, police are searching for three suspects who allegedly robbed Bluepoint Internet Café in Orange Grove along Louis Botha Avenue.

According to the police, the three suspects entered the café and pointed firearms at the owners before robbing them of items including Apple laptops, three cellphones, an iPhone, wrist watch and a passport, amounting to a total of about R60 000.

“No shots were fired and not one of the shop owners was injured during the robbery,” Police are investigating a case of business robbery and have also launched a manhunt for the suspects.

They are calling on residents to assist them with any information that may lead to the apprehension and arrests of the suspects.
