KFC Mini-Cricket gets young stars active

ORCHARDS – The Lions beat the Cobras by 7 wickets during a match managed by Orchards' young stars.

Orchards Primary School’s young cricket stars had an opportunity of a lifetime.

On 19 November when they were offered a chance to manage a Ram Slam T20 Challenge match between the Bizhub Highveld Lions and the World Sports Betting Cape Cobras.

About 10 youngsters, all affiliated to the Lions because their KFC Mini-Cricket programme falls in the Lions’ region, participated in the match. Others took part as ball boys and one took part in the coin toss in a feisty match at the Wanderers Cricket Stadium in Illovo.

Organisers said one of the ways children can participate in cricket, and further encourage them, is through initiatives like this where they get to see and to interact with their heroes.

Buhle Vathi, Gauteng’s cricket coordinator, said Orchards Primary School said, “The programme allows kids to get active in a fun way through the game of cricket.

“Through this programme, children get to meet and interact with their heroes, it encourages them to continue to work hard to achieve their goals and it helps them enjoy their cricket even more.”

This is the first phase in Cricket South Africa’s pipeline where the programme introduces cricket to children from the age of four up to 10, for boys, and 13 for girls. KFC Mini-Cricket has its own programme where all the coaches and coordinators have matches or festivals for their youngsters to participate in, said Vathi. “At matches, regional and provincial festivals, CSA or the local cricket unions, we look for talented kids and give them a higher level of coaching at their hubs.”
