NGOs from Joburg learn about the digital world

Norwood – Two local charities get tech savvy after free Digital and PR Therapy session.

The Southern African HIV Clinicians Society, based in Norwood, and Sandringham’s Chevrah Kadisha burial society were two of the 13 organisations that attended a free Digital and PR Therapy session on 17 November.

The session, hosted by Firewater, a digital marketing and public relations agency, was aimed at equipping non-profits in Johannesburg. Co-founder and chief digital officer at Firewater, Alon Berman said the session was arranged after he noticed the massive gap between what organisations were doing with limited resources and what their actual potential was.

“There are so many organisations that do not understand digital. No one has taken the time to show them the basics and equip them. It was an honour to be able to take these organisations – which do so much good in our communities – and help them.”

The session was focused on forming digital strategies, understanding search marketing, crowdfunding, social media and how organisations should be managing their public relations.

Celeste Everitt from the Chevrah Kadisha said the session was extremely useful and the organisation learnt a lot. “We learnt about Facebook pixel codes and have decided we need to start placing more of an emphasis on Instagram.”

Taryn Hatzkilson, also from the Chevrah Kadisha said social media was one of the highlights of the session. “One of the tips I took from the session was that non-profits need to invest in effective social media advertising.”
