UPDATE: Assault suspect appear in Joburg Court

JOBURG – The accused attacked and assaulted the officer who was executing his law enforcement duties.

 

A case involving a man accused of assaulting a Metro police officer in Hillbrow on 12 November was postponed by the Johannesburg Magistrate Court on 15 November.

Lungisani Ncube is accused of attacking and assaulting Metro police officer Siphiwe Sebati while he was apparently trying to execute his police duties.

It is alleged that Sebati, who was with his colleague when they were attacked by a group of churchgoers in Hillbrow, attempted to confiscate an illegally parked car outside the church when congregants decided to attack them.

It is believed that the mob of churchgoers disarmed the officer of his service pistol before they assaulted him. He was left injured and later rushed to a nearby hospital. He has since been discharged.

Ncube appeared before Magistrate van der Schyff in Court 20 on 15 November and his case was postponed to 6 December for further investigation.

A video recording of the incident went viral on social media, prompting authorities to condemn the attack.

City of Joburg Mayor, Herman Mashaba, called this incident not only an attack on the Metro police or Sebati but an attack on the rule of law within the city.

The mayor said he hopes that others who took part in this attack will also be arrested soon.

According to Metro police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, a woman was also arrested shortly after the attack.
